This two-book set brings together two novels by Meg Shaffer: The Lost Story and The Wishing Game. Each story centres on characters drawn into mysteries shaped by the past, with secrets that refuse to stay buried.

In The Lost Story, two boys vanish in the woods and return six months later without any explanation. Fifteen years on, the unanswered questions remain, as a missing persons investigator and a reclusive artist are pulled back towards the same forest while searching for a sister who disappeared there. In The Wishing Game, a teacher’s aide who grew up finding comfort in a beloved book series is tempted by a contest offering the only copy of a new novel, held at the author’s home on the real Clock Island.

Synopses

The Lost Story

Two boys go missing in the woods and reappear six months later, unable to explain where they have been or how they survived. Years later, Rafe lives as a reclusive artist with no memory of that time, while Jeremy has become a well-known missing persons investigator.

When vet tech Emilie Wendell searches for her sister, who vanished in the same forest, Jeremy may be the only person able to help. He also carries a secret about the fantastical realm the boys called home, and it may hold the key to finding Emilie’s sister.

The Wishing Game

Lucy Hart, now a teacher’s aide, grew up finding comfort in Jack Masterson’s Clock Island books and shares her love of reading with Christopher, a former student she wants to adopt. When she feels she is running out of options, Masterson announces a new book and a contest at his home on the real Clock Island, with the only copy as the prize.

The chance to win is life-changing, but Lucy faces determined rivals, the books’ illustrator, and Jack Masterson himself as the contest unfolds.
