Richard the Lionheart Collection is a three-book set by Ben Kane, bringing together Lionheart, Crusader and King. Set across the late twelfth century, the novels follow Richard the Lionheart through key moments of his rise and reign, from his early years as a formidable warrior to the pressures of kingship and conflict beyond England.

At the centre of the collection is Ferdia, an Irish nobleman also known as Rufus, whose loyalty places him at Richard’s side through court intrigue, rebellion and war. From unrest within Henry II’s family to preparations for a crusade to reclaim Jerusalem, the story moves through shifting alliances and rivalries, including confrontations with Philippe Capet of France and Richard’s younger brother, John.

Synopses

Lionheart

In 1179, Henry II rules over England, Wales, Ireland, Normandy, Brittany and Aquitaine, while unrest grows within his own household. Ferdia, an Irish nobleman taken captive during the conquest of his homeland, saves the life of Richard, the king’s son. Rewarded for his bravery, he becomes Richard’s squire as Richard’s reputation as a warrior takes shape.

Crusader

In 1189, Richard is crowned King of England and begins to set his kingdom in order. He prepares for a gruelling crusade to reclaim Jerusalem, with Ferdia travelling alongside him throughout. Their journey takes them from southern France to Italy, to the kingdom of Sicily and beyond, before Richard faces a bitter siege as he nears the Holy Land.

King

In autumn 1192, with Jerusalem still held by the Saracens and a peace treaty agreed with Saladin, Richard is able to begin the journey back to his troubled kingdom. Ferdia remains at his side as they confront threats on multiple fronts. Among them are Philippe Capet of France and Richard’s younger brother, John.
