Mo Willems’ Pigeon series is gathered in a seven-book set of interactive picture books, shaped around the Pigeon’s demands, complaints and big ideas. Each story invites the reader to respond directly as the Pigeon tries to persuade the audience to agree with him.
Across the collection, the Pigeon argues his way through situations including bedtime, bath time and school, and reacts when someone else gets what they want by asking politely. The set also includes a story where a bus driver leaves one clear instruction, and another where a hot dog discovery leads to an unexpected challenge. Presented as humorous, speech-led reads, these books place audience participation at the centre of the experience.
As the bus driver gets ready for bed, the reader is left with one task: do not let the Pigeon stay up late. The Pigeon insists he is wide awake and even proposes a hot-dog party, leaving the decision to the audience.
When the bus driver takes a break, he gives the reader a single instruction: do not let the Pigeon drive the bus. The Pigeon tries every tactic to get into the driver’s seat, from whining and wheedling to fibbing and flattering. Told entirely in speech bubbles, the story depends on direct reader involvement.
The Pigeon argues he does not need a bath and denies there is any smell. He claims he took one last month, maybe, and needs determined convincing before he will take the plunge.
The Pigeon finds a hot dog and cannot wait to eat it. A hungry, clever little duckling appears and asks for a bite, leaving the reader to see whether the duckling can outsmart the Pigeon and get a share.
The Pigeon is furious when Duckling gets a cookie. After all the Pigeon has asked for across the series, Duckling arrives with impeccable manners, asks politely, and receives a cookie, leaving the Pigeon outraged for one simple reason: she asked nicely.
The Pigeon has wanted a puppy for ever, or at least since last Tuesday, and begs the reader to agree. When he finally faces the idea of having his own puppy, it is not quite as wonderful as he imagined.
The Pigeon is about to get schooled and is full of questions. He insists he already knows everything, well, almost everything, and worries about whether he will like school, whether the teacher will like him, and what might happen if he learns too much.
