This four-book collection brings together a selection of horror novels by T Kingfisher: What Moves The Dead, A House with Good Bones, The Hollow Places and The Twisted Ones. Each story begins with an unsettling return to a familiar place, where ordinary settings shift into something stranger, and the characters are forced to confront what they find.
Across the set, a retired soldier travels to a remote ancestral home after hearing a childhood friend is dying; a visit to a family house in a North Carolina suburb reveals disturbing changes; a recently divorced woman takes refuge in her uncle’s Wonder Museum while cataloguing its exhibits; and a request to clear a late grandmother’s hoarded home leads to the discovery of a journal filled with baffling rants.
Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives news that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying and rushes to the Ushers’ ancestral home in the remote countryside of Ruritania. There, fungal growths and possessed wildlife surround a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices, while her brother Roderick suffers from a mysterious malady of the nerves.
In an ordinary North Carolina suburb, Samantha Montgomery arrives at her family home to find a massive black vulture perched on the mailbox, watching the house. Inside, the familiar eclectic warmth has vanished. The walls have been repainted a sterile white, and everything feels changed.
Recently divorced and facing the prospect of moving back in with her parents, Carrot needs a place to live. When her Uncle Earl, owner of the Wonder Museum, offers her a stay in exchange for cataloguing the exhibits, she agrees. The museum is filled with taxidermy, shrunken heads and an assortment of Mystery Junk.
Mouse agrees to clean out her dead grandmother’s house at her father’s request, only to find it crammed with hoarded rubbish. The situation worsens when she discovers her step-grandfather’s journal. At first, it appears to be a collection of nonsensical rants.
