Synopses

The Saboteur of Auschwitz

This book tells the true story of Arthur Dodd, a young British soldier captured in 1942 and transported to Oswiecim in Polish Upper Silesia, later known as Auschwitz. It describes his experience of forced labour and brutal treatment, and his determination to resist through sabotage and other acts intended to ease the suffering of Jewish prisoners. The account also highlights the presence of military POWs in the camp and describes differences in how prisoners were treated by the SS.

Auschwitz: The Nazis and The 'Final Solution'

Laurence Rees sets out a history of Auschwitz, tracing its development from a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners into a site of mass murder in which around a million Jews were killed. The book examines the mentality and motivations of key Nazi decision makers, and includes testimony from perpetrators speaking about their actions.

Drawing on Rees’s documentary work and material from the Russian archives, it presents facts about aspects of camp life and operations, including references to a brothel and corruption within the camp. It also addresses themes of brutality, courage, escape and survival in the context of events on a vast scale.
