Synopses

The Seeker

London, 1654: Oliver Cromwell has declared himself Lord Protector, but opposition gathers at home and abroad. The city is portrayed as a dense network of spies, merchants, priests, soldiers, exiles and assassins. At the centre of this web is Damian Seeker, an agent of the Lord Protector.

The Black Friar

In 1655, Cromwell’s regime faces threats from every direction. Damian Seeker, now Captain of Cromwell’s Guard, is acutely aware of the dangers closing in. Tensions sharpen as Parliament resents the Army’s influence, while the Army resents Cromwell’s absolute power.

Destroying Angel

Captain Damian Seeker travels north, tasked with preparing the way for the rule of the major-generals. Under Colonel Robert Lilburne’s command in York, he is sent to a small village on the North York moors to deliver details of stringent new anti-Royalist laws. What should be routine is complicated by what he finds there.

The Bear Pit

The Commonwealth is described as balanced on a knife edge, with Royalists and disillusioned former Parliamentarians united against Cromwell, “a king in all but name”. Three conspirators, representing these factions, plan to assassinate the Lord Protector. Their aim is to clear the path for Charles Stuart’s return to the throne.

The House of Lamentations

Summer, 1658: after combined Stuart and Spanish forces are heavily defeated on the coast of Flanders, the Republic appears close to safety. Even so, a final, desperate plan is set in motion. The question becomes who can stop it, if not Captain Damian Seeker.
