The Grail Quest Collection is a four-novel set by Bernard Cornwell, following English archer Thomas of Hookton through the Hundred Years War and a personal pursuit of a stolen relic. Spanning the years 1342 to 1356, the series moves between campaigns in France and dangers closer to home, repeatedly placing archers at the heart of the fighting.

From the destruction of the French countryside during Edward III’s campaigns to the battles that culminate near Poitiers, the stories track Thomas’s resolve to avenge his father’s death while continuing a quest connected to the Holy Grail. Across truces, invasions and the arrival of plague, the landscape shifts and the conflict intensifies for those drawn into the struggle.

Synopses

1356

In 1356, France prepares as the English army advances under the Black Prince, while French forces attempt to hunt them down. Thomas of Hookton is caught with an outnumbered group near Poitiers, where a remarkable confrontation triggers a battle that shapes the campaign.

Harlequin

In 1342, Edward III’s army devastates the French countryside, supported by archers the French call Harlequins. Thomas fights among them while pursuing his own mission: to avenge his father’s death and reclaim a stolen relic, a search that leads towards a clash near Crécy.

Vagabond

Set in 1346, England faces the threat of invasion as Scots attack in support of France. Thomas, recognised as an archer and hero of Crécy, returns to the north while continuing his search for a relic he believes may be the Holy Grail, as archers are once again drawn into battle.

Heretic

In 1347, a truce in the Hundred Years War gives Thomas the chance to pursue his enemy and continue his quest for the Holy Grail. Travelling south with his men-at-arms, he stages raids to draw his foe out, until the plague changes the land and makes the search feel more urgent than ever.
