Synopsis

First published in 1928, The Walls of Jericho opens with Black lawyer Fred Merrit buying a house in a white neighbourhood near Harlem, where he is forced to contend with the racism of his new neighbours. Tensions sharpen when he hires movers Jinx Jenkins and Bubber Brown to help him settle into the property.

What follows is presented as a satire of jazz-age Harlem, with an emphasis on race and class. This edition also brings together four short stories originally published in The Atlantic: City of Refuge, The Promised Land, Ringtail, and Blades of Steel, making it well suited to readers interested in literature and fiction.
