This eight-book collection brings together a selection of Kathy Reichs’ Temperance Brennan novels, following forensic anthropologist Dr Temperance Brennan as she is drawn into complex investigations involving human remains and unanswered questions.

Across these stories, Brennan is called to examine discoveries ranging from historic bones to newly uncovered bodies, with cases that lead her into military records, missing persons, and crimes that span different locations. As she pursues evidence and challenges official assumptions, her work repeatedly places her under pressure from those who would prefer certain truths to remain hidden.

Synopses

Spider Bones

Tempe is called to examine a newly dead body, only to discover it appears to be an ex-soldier reportedly killed in Vietnam in 1968. The case takes her into the world of the American military as she investigates who is really buried in the soldier’s grave. As she traces connections between lives and deaths, she realises some people want the past left undisturbed.

Monday Mourning

In an old building, remains are dismissed as historic, but Tempe suspects otherwise. The bones of three young women suggest murder, drawing her into an increasingly dangerous investigation. Three women have disappeared, and Tempe fears she may be next.

Fatal Voyage

Tempe is first on the scene of a grim discovery, but her investigation raises more questions than answers. When she begins to press on sensitive lines of enquiry, her professional standing is threatened. Convinced another body lies in the woods, she confronts a conspiracy of silence and uncovers deceit and depravity.

Flash and Bones

A human hand appears in a barrel of asphalt beside the Charlotte racetrack, and Tempe must work quickly before the year’s big race. Before she can examine the remains properly, the FBI confiscate and destroy the body. A new lead emerges when a young engineer reports a couple who vanished twelve years earlier, and a conspiracy begins to unravel.

206 Bones

Accused of mishandling an autopsy connected to a missing heiress, Tempe finds a routine case turning sinister. Before she can reach a key source of information, he is found dead. In Montreal, three elderly women are murdered, and Tempe becomes convinced the cases are linked, even when the clues do not seem to fit.

As questions mount, she must determine whether she has made serious errors or is being sabotaged. With her career under threat, it becomes clear her life may be at risk as well.

Devil Bones

An underground chamber is uncovered in a dilapidated house, revealing a ritualistic display including a human skull. Tempe identifies the skull as belonging to a young black female, but must establish how and when she died. As she closes in on answers, a headless body marked with Satanic symbols is discovered and local vigilantes begin a witch-hunt.

Deadly Decisions

A nine-year-old girl is killed in crossfire on her way to ballet class, followed by the discovery of a teenager’s body found hundreds of miles from where she was killed. Tempe struggles to remain detached when the child’s body arrives at the morgue. After an exhumation reveals another hidden grave near a biker gang headquarters, she begins a lone and risky investigation into organised crime.

Grave Secrets

In Guatemala, Tempe works in searing heat as she excavates disturbing discoveries. Four young girls go missing from Guatemala City, and a skeleton found behind a rundown hotel requires her expertise to determine identity and cause of death. As she searches for answers, she is blocked at every turn, and it becomes clear that some will do anything to keep secrets buried.
