The C.E. Rose Collection brings together four novels linked by imposing houses, private lives and the secrets kept behind grand façades. Spanning Northern England and shifting between past and present, these stories follow characters drawn into unfamiliar households, complicated family dynamics and memories that refuse to stay buried.

Across the set, a new housekeeper arrives at an ancient mansion, a new mother struggles in the aftermath of childbirth, a housemaid becomes entangled with an aristocratic family, and a lonely young woman is captivated by the attention of a glamorous actress. Each title centres on the tension between outward respectability and what is concealed within.

Included titles

  • The House of Hidden Secrets
  • The House on the Water's Edge
  • The Shadows of Rutherford House
  • The Attic at Wilton Place

Synopses

The House of Hidden Secrets

Serena Green accepts a position as housekeeper for wealthy widower Hayden Ramsay and finds herself living at Ramsay Hall, an ancient, sprawling mansion in Northern England. As she settles into the household, she befriends Hayden’s younger son, Hugh, while facing the coldness of his older brother, Jack, towards her and Lana. Beneath the hall’s beautiful exterior, ugly secrets lie hidden.

The House on the Water's Edge

Five weeks after the birth of baby Joe, Ali Baker is struggling to cope. Exhausted and haunted by painful memories, she feels far removed from the polished, professional barrister she has worked hard to become.

The Shadows of Rutherford House

In 1959, Milly begins a new life as a housemaid at Rutherford House, employed by the aristocratic Rutherford-Percy family. Drawn to her mistress, Vivienne, she becomes deeply involved in the household and is entrusted with dark secrets concealed beneath the mansion’s grand exterior.

In the present day, Christie works as a psychiatric nurse and meets troubled patient Lillian Percy, Vivienne’s granddaughter and heiress to Rutherford House.

The Attic at Wilton Place

Ruth Parker longs for love and attention, shaped by a childhood spent overlooked by a cold, critical mother. Her hurt has become loneliness and a crippling lack of self-esteem. When glamorous actress ‘Aunt’ Vanessa, her mother’s childhood friend, takes an interest in her, Ruth is swept up in the intensity of that attention.
