Wideacre Trilogy is a three-book collection by Philippa Gregory, bringing together novels set in and around Wideacre Hall and the Wideacre estate. Across the series, the narrative explores changing fortunes and competing claims to inheritance, with lives shaped by poverty, ambition and the pull of the land.

Spanning the English countryside of the eighteenth century and the Sussex farmlands, the trilogy follows characters tied to Wideacre by birth, desire and circumstance. Each instalment considers the consequences of wanting to possess what cannot easily be owned, as rivalries and personal choices ripple through the estate and those who live in its shadow.

Synopses

Wideacre

Wideacre Hall is the ancestral home Beatrice Lacey loves, set in the heart of the English countryside. As a woman in the eighteenth century, she has no right to inherit, in a world that mistreats women. Convinced that control can only be secured through a series of terrible crimes, she pursues ownership of the land, with consequences for everyone around her.

The Favoured Child

The Wideacre estate is bankrupt, the villagers live in poverty, and Wideacre Hall has become a smoke-blackened ruin. Two children are raised in sheltered innocence in the Dower House: equal claimants to the inheritance and rivals for the love of the village. Bound by a secret childhood betrothal yet forbidden to marry, they face a future in which only one can be the favoured child.

Meridon

Meridon, a Romany girl, is determined to escape the harsh poverty of her childhood. She rides bareback in a travelling show while her sister Dandy risks her life on the trapeze, and Meridon commits herself to freeing them both from danger and want.

When Dandy takes too much too quickly, Meridon is left alone, riding in bitter grief through the rich Sussex farmlands towards a house called Wideacre, awaiting the return of the last of the Laceys.
