Hopeless Heroes: The Greek God Collection brings together eight adventures by Stella Tarakson and Nick Roberts, following Tim Baker as he is repeatedly drawn into the world of Ancient Greece. Each story begins with an everyday problem that quickly escalates into encounters with gods, heroes and unexpected dangers, often sparked by mysterious objects and Tim’s attempts to put things right.

Across the collection, Tim faces everything from a newly released Hercules who causes chaos while trying to help, to Hera’s schemes, puzzling messages and risky journeys that test his nerve. With friends alongside him, Tim must navigate traps, rescues and impossible-sounding plans, whether he is dealing with a stolen vase, a statue brought to life, or a mission that demands outsmarting Hera herself.

Synopses

Here Comes Hercules

When Tim Baker breaks his mum’s favourite vase, he releases Hercules. The hero tries to be helpful, but his efforts threaten the flowers, the rug and even the kitchen.

Hera’s Terrible Trap

Tim thinks his adventures are finished until he hitches a ride to Ancient Greece on a stolen vase. He ends up trapped with an army of peacocks and a hero who cannot stop admiring himself.

Arachne Golden Gloves

Tim and Zoe believe they know how to bring a statue to life. They need Jason’s help, while someone watches them like flies in a web.

Problems with Pythagoras

Tim has plenty to deal with: he is failing maths, banished from Ancient Greece, and unsure what to call his mum’s new boyfriend.

Apollo’s Mystic Message

Tim discovers his picture on an ancient oil flask at the British Museum. Wondering if Hera is planning a trap, he looks for a god who can see the future.

Jason’s Wild Winds!

Tim wants advice on keeping his model boat afloat. When Zoe is injured, only Jason and the Argonut can help him save her.

Circe’s beastly feast

It could be Tim’s last visit to Ancient Greece, but he is busy trading song titles with Apollo, delivering a package to Narcissus and escaping from Hera. Events lead to him making a pig of himself at Circe’s table.

Odysseus’ Trojan Trick!

Agatha has been taken prisoner, and Tim and his friends must try to rescue her. To succeed, they would need to trick Hera and sneak into her fortress past her army, even if it seems impossible.
