The Judith Kerr Collection brings together three connected novels that trace Anna’s life from childhood in Germany to later years in London and beyond. The story begins in 1933, when nine-year-old Anna notices political posters but does not yet understand their significance, until the face of Adolf Hitler signals changes that begin to affect her family’s everyday life.

As events escalate, Anna, her brother Max and their mother leave Germany in secrecy, forced to abandon familiar routines, friends and treasured belongings. The collection continues with Anna as a teenager in London during the Blitz, and later follows her return to Berlin as she faces the past alongside urgent family circumstances.

Synopses

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit

In 1933, nine-year-old Anna is largely unaware of politics, but Adolf Hitler’s growing presence begins to reshape her world. When her father disappears, Anna and Max leave Germany with their mother in secrecy, leaving behind home, school friends and well-loved possessions.

Bombs on Aunt Dainty

Now a teenager in London during the Blitz, Anna experiences first love while living with nightly uncertainty. Still classed as an “enemy alien”, she struggles with the knowledge that the bombs are coming from Germany and fears what could happen if Hitler invades.

A Small Person Far Away

Anna remembers Berlin as the place she lived before Hitler, before she spoke English and before her family became refugees. With Mama dangerously ill, she returns to Berlin and is forced to confront old fears, the past and urgent questions of life and death.
