Quarterdeck, Tenacious, Treachery and Invasion form a four-book set from Julian Stockwin’s Kydd series. The collection follows Thomas Kydd’s progress in His Majesty’s Navy, from his early days after being pressed into the King’s Service to taking on greater responsibility at sea.

Across these novels, Kydd faces examinations that will confirm his rank, shifting favour among his superiors, and the pressures of service during the wars with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. From Halifax to the Channel Islands and the English coast, the stories place him amid urgent missions, threats of invasion and the demands of command.

Synopses

Quarterdeck

After being promoted to acting lieutenant at the Battle of Camperdown in October 1797, Thomas Kydd must pass an examination to confirm his rank or face a return before the mast. Pressed into the King’s Service and drawn to life at sea, he rises from humble origins towards the quarterdeck as an officer in His Majesty’s Navy.

Tenacious

In Halifax, Thomas Paine Kydd is enjoying recognition among his fellow officers when Tenacious is called to join Horatio Nelson’s taskforce. Sent on an urgent reconnaissance mission, the force searches for Bonaparte’s fleet amid intelligence that the French Revolution is about to ignite the Mediterranean.

Treachery

Having worked his way from press-ganged seaman to captain of his own ship, Thomas Kydd now faces disgrace. After losing favour with his superiors and suffering personal tragedy, he is sent to guard the Channel Islands from Napoleon’s forces, before a brutal betrayal off the Normandy Coast sees him removed from command.

Invasion

With Napoleon’s forces poised to invade Britain, Commander Thomas Kydd’s ship is among the fleet defending the English coast. His honour restored and reunited with Teazer, he prepares to fight, only to be abruptly withdrawn and sent to Dover on a secret mission to guard a mysterious American inventor.
