Synopses

A New Home in the Dales

October 1940. Bobby Bancroft, a typist at a city newspaper, wants to become a reporter and is pleased to win a junior role at The Tyke. After moving to Silverdale, she finds the realities of village life difficult, from the close-knit locals to the animals, while vet Charlie appears determined to lead her astray. As she tries to settle, she begins to wonder whether the Dales can ever feel like home.

War Comes to the Dales

April 1941. Silverdale seems largely untouched by the Blitz and continues much as before. As shortages and rationing take hold and more young men are called up, Bobby juggles her work at The Tyke with a new position as an ARP warden. With her editor Reg and his wife taking in two evacuees, and Charlie preparing for RAF training, she faces a choice between the job she loves and the man she loves.

A Wartime Wedding in the Dales

January 1942. After Christmas at Moorside Farm with her fiancé Charlie and his family, Bobby prepares for his departure when he is called to fight. She must also leave The Tyke to join the wartime effort as conscription of women is introduced. While friends Topsy and Teddy become engaged and Bobby sets her own wedding date, she trains as a WAAF far from home, supported by her Canadian friend Ernie King, an instructor at the training centre.
