San Marzano Cinquanta Collezione N.V.

From Cantine San Marzano, the Cinquanta Collezione N.V. is a Primitivo wine shaped by a cooperative founded in 1962 by nineteen vine growers in San Marzano. Now composed of over 1200 vine growers, Cantine San Marzano is known for a production philosophy described as simple but uncompromising, with “passion” and “competence” at the heart of its everyday activity.

The vineyard sits in Salento, Puglia, at approximately 100 metres above sea level. Relatively high summer temperatures encourage even ripening, while predominantly clay soils with some rocks help drainage. The Primitivo is grown in the highly reputed area of Manduria, locally regarded as the best in Puglia. Fruit comes from old bush vines over 50 years old, planted at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare, with harvest taking place in September when the grapes are slightly overripe.

In the glass, it’s described as generous and fleshy, with dark-berried fruit layered with chocolate and hints of spice, finishing smooth with purity of fruit and a long, sustained finish.
