The Inheritance Cycle is a four-book set by Christopher Paolini, bringing together the complete sequence of Eragon’s journey as a Dragon Rider alongside his dragon, Saphira. Beginning with a chance discovery in the forest, the story moves from a simple life to a world shaped by destiny, magic and power, set against an Empire ruled by King Galbatorix.
Across the series, Eragon faces training, battles and difficult choices as resistance fights to survive. From travelling to the land of the elves to confronting unrest among rebels, the narrative builds towards a final reckoning in which the fate of an entire civilisation rests on Eragon and Saphira’s strength.
Eragon discovers a polished stone in the forest, believing it could help his family through winter. When it produces a dragon hatchling, his life changes overnight as he is drawn into a perilous world of destiny, magic and power. Guided only by an ancient sword and an old storyteller’s advice, he must face dark enemies within an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds.
After saving the rebel state from destruction by the forces of King Galbatorix, Eragon and Saphira travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves. There, Eragon seeks further training in magic and swordsmanship, but chaos and betrayal follow him and trust is uncertain. Back home in Carvahall, his cousin Roran fights a new battle that places Eragon in even greater danger.
Following a colossal battle, Eragon and Saphira escape with their lives, only to face new demands and promises that may be impossible to keep. Bound by an oath to help rescue Roran’s beloved Katrina, Eragon is forced into choices that carry him across the Empire and beyond. As Galbatorix attempts to crush and twist him to his own purposes, Eragon battles on behalf of the Varden and is tested as a potential leader.
Eragon, known as Shadeslayer and Dragon Rider, was once a poor farm boy, and Saphira was only a blue stone in the forest. Now the fate of an entire civilisation rests on them, after months of training and battle that have brought both victories and heartbreaking loss. With the real battle still ahead, they must confront Galbatorix, with no second chances if they fail.
