The Anna Jacobs Birch End series brings together three stories set in Lancashire during the mid-1930s, each following a woman facing change, loss and difficult choices within village life. Across the collection, new arrivals and long-standing residents navigate grief, ambition and the pressures of expectation, as personal hopes collide with the actions of others.
In A Widow's Courage, A Daughter's Journey and A Woman's Promise, the focus moves between Ellin Valley and Birch End, where friendships form quickly but security is never guaranteed. From the pursuit of a cottage home to the challenge of building a future after bereavement, the set traces how lives can shift suddenly, and how determination is tested when unscrupulous individuals threaten what matters most.
Lancashire, 1934. Three years after her husband’s sudden death, Stella unexpectedly comes into money and decides to begin again in the country. She settles in Ellin Valley, makes friends, and falls in love with a cottage in Birch End, but an unscrupulous man wants it too.
Meanwhile, local handyman Wilf Pollard’s life changes drastically when tragedy leaves him as the sole support for his two young children.
Jo Melling arrives in Birch End from Australia, grieving her father’s recent death and intending to stay only briefly. After finding her distant family, she becomes far more involved in village life than she expected, and soon faces danger.
Jo is also drawn to Nick, a handsome newcomer planning to settle and start a business, but growing closer to Jo forces him to consider what he is willing to give up.
In 1935, Frankie Redfern is the only female cabinet maker in the valley, and faces prejudice, even from her mother. Content working for her father, she is determined not to surrender her independence or the work she loves for marriage.
When her husband becomes gravely ill, her mother takes over and causes serious trouble, while an unscrupulous cousin begins to help Frankie for reasons of his own.
