John Flanagan’s Brotherband Chronicles collection brings together the first six books in the series, following Hal and his Brotherband crew, the Herons. Chosen for teams known as Brotherbands, the boys face months of gruelling battles on treacherous seas, where training and rivalry push every group to its limits.
Across the set, the Herons move from competition to high-stakes missions, including the fallout from a stolen Skandian artefact and a pursuit that runs through mighty rivers and terrifying rapids. Their voyages also take them towards the Kingdom of Araluen, into a dangerous quest connected to the slave market in Socorro, and on an urgent assignment involving Princess Cassandra. Later, a violent storm drives them far off course to an unfamiliar western land where the locals are absent and the crew suspect they are being watched.
Boys are selected for Brotherbands and must endure months of gruelling battles at sea. Hal becomes the reluctant leader of a band of outcasts, small and wiry but determined to prove themselves. They face the other bands in an ultimate race with only one winner.
Hal and the Herons win the Brotherband competition against the strongest young warriors in Skandia. Their victory is cut short when the Andomal, Skandia’s most sacred artefact, is stolen. The Herons are blamed for the theft.
Hal and his crew pursue the pirate Zavac, determined to stop the bloodthirsty thief from causing further harm. Zavac is believed to have the Andomal, stolen when the Brotherband let down their guard. The chase runs down mighty rivers and terrifying rapids to the lawless fortress of Ragusa.
The Heron Brotherband become the Skandian duty ship to the Kingdom of Araluen and set out with an unexpected new crew member. An enemy from their past returns, sending them on a dangerous quest. Their mission centres on freeing captured Araluans from the slave market in Socorro.
King Duncan of Araluen assigns Hal and the Heron Brotherband an urgent mission. An assassination attempt on Princess Cassandra has been foiled. The killers remain determined to complete their honour-bound duty.
A massive storm blows the Brotherband crew far off course, leaving them washed up on the shores of a land far to the west. Hal cannot recognise it from any of his maps. With the locals nowhere to be seen, the Herons sense they are being watched.
