Circe is presented here in a new anniversary edition. Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2019, the novel reimagines a figure described as woman, witch, myth and mortal, tracing an outsider’s life between the worlds of gods and humans.
Born in the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, Circe is portrayed as different from her parents and is scorned and rejected. As she grows up in the shadows, she discovers a power of her own: witchcraft. When this gift threatens the gods, she is banished to the island of Aiaia, where she develops her craft through spells, strange herbs and the taming of wild beasts. Her solitude does not last, and among the visitors to her island is the mortal Odysseus, for whom she will risk everything.
In Helios’s household, Circe is born unlike the powerful and fearsome gods around her and is pushed to the margins. She discovers witchcraft and, when her abilities alarm the gods, she is exiled to Aiaia to refine her occult craft. There she casts spells, gathers herbs and tames wild beasts, until her isolation is disrupted by visitors, including the mortal Odysseus.
