This five-book collection by Damien Lewis brings together a sequence of action-led accounts centred on the formation and wartime operations of the SAS. Beginning with SAS Brothers in Arms, the set follows a close-knit band from the unit’s foundation through to the Italian landings, drawing on previously untold stories and new archival sources.
Across the remaining volumes, the narrative moves through key moments of the Second World War, from invasion planning and raids to missions behind enemy lines and operations in Italy. The books reference the SAS motto ‘Who Dares Wins’ and include figures such as SAS commander Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne, alongside episodes involving RAF reconnaissance and attempts to break entrenched German defences.
Damien Lewis traces the story of the mavericks and visionaries who made the SAS. Using previously untold stories and new archival sources, he follows one band from the unit’s foundation through to the Italian landings, and the part they played as the war turned in the Allies’ favour.
In summer 1943, a vast invasion fleet sailed for Europe. At the front were a few hundred elite soldiers aboard a Royal Navy warship carrying the motto ‘Who Dares Wins’, led by Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne and tasked with an assault against heavily defended Nazi shores while outnumbered fifty-to-one.
In summer 1944, the SAS were assigned crucial D-Day missions deep behind enemy lines. Facing Panzer divisions with raw courage and Willys jeeps, Mayne’s men relied on unconventional warfare while being hunted at every turn.
In winter 1941, an RAF reconnaissance pilot flying a lone unarmed Spitfire made a dangerous dash across the French coast. Near Le Havre, a giant convex dish was found positioned on cliffs and directed across the Channel towards Britain.
During the hard-fought winter of 1944, the Allied advance in Italy stalled at the mountainous defences of the Gothic Line. Two men were parachuted in with a mission to penetrate deep into enemy territory and attack the Germans’ headquarters.
