This four-book set brings together Deborah Harkness’s All Souls novels, opening with A Discovery of Witches. The collection follows Diana Bishop, a young scholar and descendant of witches, after she finds the long-lost alchemical manuscript Ashmole 782 in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Its return draws her into a hidden world, which she must navigate alongside Matthew Clairmont, a vampire geneticist.

As the sequence continues, Diana and Matthew travel to Elizabethan London, encountering spies, magic and Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night, while the search for Ashmole 782 intensifies. The story then moves towards a concluding volume that brings them back to the present and to Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, as new crises emerge and the manuscript’s missing pages become increasingly urgent. The set also includes Times Convert, described as an unconventional love story set in the same world.

Synopses

A Discovery of Witches

Diana Bishop, a young scholar and descendant of witches, discovers the enchanted alchemical manuscript Ashmole 782 in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she explores with vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.

Shadow of Night

Diana and Matthew travel through time to Elizabethan London, entering a world of spies and magic. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana looks for a witch to tutor her, Matthew’s past closes in and their journey becomes far more dangerous.

The Book of Life

Returning from Elizabethan London to the present, Diana and Matthew face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, they reunite with familiar figures from A Discovery of Witches, with one significant exception, as the hunt for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages becomes more urgent.

Times Convert

Deborah Harkness revisits the world introduced in A Discovery of Witches with an unconventional love story.
