Synopses

Slumberland

After creating the perfect beat, DJ Darky sets out to find Charles Stone, also known as the Schwa, an avant-garde jazzman he wants to play over his sonic masterpiece. His search takes him to a recently unified Berlin, where he moves through the city while reflecting on race, sex, love, Teutonic gods and the Berlin Wall, in pursuit of an artistic and spiritual other.

The White Boy Shuffle

Beatty’s debut novel follows teenage surf-bum Gunnar Kaufman after his mother moves from suburban Santa Monica to urban West Los Angeles. There, he shifts from neighbourhood outcast to basketball superstar, and later becomes a reluctant messiah to a divided, downtrodden people.

The Sellout

Dickens has been erased from the map in an attempt to spare California further embarrassment. In response, the narrator takes an extreme step by reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, leading the situation to the Supreme Court.
