The Renée Watson Collection brings together five novels focused on young people as they navigate school, family and community. Across the set, each story follows a character working out where they belong, what they want, and how they are seen by others.

From a student who commutes to a private school where she feels like an outsider, to best friends who launch a Women’s Rights Club at their New York City high school, the collection presents a range of voices and situations. The set also spans a birthday trip to Harlem to meet extended family, a move to grandparents after a loss, and a summer shaped by activism, open mic nights and unexpected feelings.

Synopses

Piecing Me Together

Jade is determined to succeed in a world that seems set against her. She takes every opportunity she can, including travelling away from her friends each day to attend a private school where she feels like an outsider, but where opportunities are available.

Watch Us Rise

Jasmine and Chelsea are best friends with a shared goal. Frustrated by how young women are treated at their “progressive” New York City high school, they start a Women’s Rights Club and continue even when no one turns up.

Some Places More Than Others

Amara thinks about the places that have shaped her, and those she is still learning. For her birthday, she wants to visit her father’s family in Harlem, meet Grandpa Earl and her cousins, and stay in the brownstone where her father grew up, hoping it will help her understand her family and herself in a new way.

What Momma Left Me

Serenity is good at keeping secrets, and she has a lifetime of them. After her mother dies and her father is gone, she and her brother move in with their grandparents to start over, and she begins adjusting to a new friend, a new church and a new school.

Love Is a Revolution

Nala Robertson reluctantly agrees to attend an open mic night for her cousin-sister-friend Imani’s birthday and falls in instant love with Tye Brown, the MC. As Tye spends the summer putting on community events as an activist, Nala would rather watch films and try seasonal flavours at the local creamery.
