This two-book set by Renée Ahdieh pairs The Rose and the Dagger and The Wrath and the Dawn, set in Khorasan under the rule of its Caliph. Across both novels, Shahrzad is drawn into Khalid’s world, where fear, loyalty and the threat of war shape every decision.

In one story, she volunteers to marry a ruler known for taking a new bride each night, only for her to be executed at sunrise. In the other, she is separated from her husband and returned to her family, who have taken refuge with Khalid’s enemies, while her childhood sweetheart commands forces determined to destroy Khalid’s empire. Caught between competing loyalties, Shahrzad refuses to be used and begins to form her own plan.

The Rose and the Dagger

With war approaching, Shahrzad is torn from Khalid, the Caliph of Khorasan. Once certain he was a monster, she now believes he is weighed down by guilt and bound to a powerful curse that may keep them apart.

Back with her family among Khalid’s enemies, and alongside Tariq, her childhood sweetheart, she is pulled between those she cares for. As Tariq leads forces intent on destroying Khalid’s empire, Shahrzad refuses to become a pawn and sets her own plan in motion.

The Wrath and the Dawn

In a land ruled by a killer, each dawn brings horror to a different family. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night, only for her to be executed at sunrise.

Sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry him, determined to survive and take revenge for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Her wit and will carry her further than anyone before, even as she begins to question what she feels for a murderer.
