Bernard Cornwell’s Grail Quest series is presented here as a three-book collection, bringing together Vagabond, Harlequin and Heretic. Set against the backdrop of war between England and France, the novels follow Thomas of Hookton, an archer drawn into a dangerous pursuit connected to Christendom’s greatest relic: the Holy Grail.

Across the sequence, Thomas is driven by a promise to retrieve a stolen relic and is repeatedly pulled back into conflict, from the fields of France to battles in northern England and beyond. As rival forces close in, he becomes both hunter and hunted, navigating shifting loyalties, religious peril and the brutal realities of medieval warfare.

Synopses

Vagabond

After surviving the battle of Crecy, Thomas is sent back to England with the task of finding the Holy Grail. When an invading army threatens northern England, he joins the fighting at Neville’s Cross, unaware of enemies determined to destroy him. Hunted and wounded, he is forced to flee, travelling to Normandy to rescue Will Skeat before being driven on towards Brittany, where his pursuers finally close in.

Harlequin

When Thomas’s village is sacked by French raiders, he vows to retrieve a relic stolen from Hookton’s church. He becomes an archer with the English army, moving through a world of shifting alliances and looming threats. His search leads across France and towards Crecy, where two great armies meet in battle, and the quest for the Grail begins.

Heretic

In 1347, with Calais captured and a truce in place, Thomas continues his pursuit of the Grail and is sent to Gascony to draw out his deadliest enemy, Guy Vexille. Leading archers on raids, he is later hunted as his campaign is destroyed by the church. With a single companion condemned as a heretic, he searches the valley of Astarac, only for events to be overtaken by the eruption of a devastating plague across Europe.
