This three-book set brings together children’s stories by Danny Wallace: The Day the Screens Went Blank, The Boss of Everyone and The Luckiest Kid in the World. Each title follows a ten-year-old at the centre of an unexpected situation, from sudden disruption at home to surprising responsibility and attention.

Across the collection, the stories move from a world thrown into chaos by blank screens, to a games company where a child becomes the boss for a day, and on to an “average” boy whose life changes after being identified as the most average kid in the country. The set is presented as three separate adventures, each with its own premise and cast.

Synopses

The Day the Screens Went Blank

Ten-year-old Stella wakes to find screens everywhere have gone blank, and her family, town and the wider world are thrown into chaos. With Grandma stranded at the other end of the country, the family sets off on a rescue mission. The journey becomes a road trip filled with driving disasters and family fallouts.

The Boss of Everyone

Joss, aged ten, wants to be Class Monitor, but ends up taking on an even bigger role. On Take Your Kid to Work Day, she visits the games company where her dad works, and the boss announces he will give his job to whoever has the best idea for a company game-changer. Joss volunteers, and suddenly she is the boss, leaving her thrilled and her dad horrified as she tries to whip everyone into shape.

The Luckiest Kid in the World

Joe Smith is described as average in every way, until a survey identifies him as the most average kid in the country. That label makes him unexpectedly sought-after, with companies asking him to test their latest products. He receives mountains of gifts and is given special experiences, including cinema screenings and having an entire water park to himself.
