For a first step into astronomy, the Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ brings together a 130mm Newtonian reflector optical tube, a 650mm focal length and a manual German equatorial mount in a well-established beginner-friendly format. Its f/5 optical system is paired with a preassembled tripod and mount, along with 20mm and 10mm eyepieces to get started straight away.
This model uses a CG-3 equatorial mount with setting circles and slow-motion control knobs for fine adjustment in Right Ascension and Declination. The 20mm eyepiece includes a built-in erect image corrector, adding terrestrial viewing alongside astronomy. A built-on StarPointer red dot finderscope helps with locating objects before viewing through the main telescope, while the included Starry Night Basic Edition software and SkyPortal app add useful support for learning the night sky.
Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or with an optic (unless you have the proper solar filter). Permanent and irreversible eye damage may result. Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface. Internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it. Never leave your optic unsupervised. Make sure an adult who is familiar with the correct operating procedures is with your optic at all times, especially when children are present.
