The Anthony Blanke Mysteries brings together two historical crime novels by Steven Veerapen, set in the court of Henry VIII. Across both stories, Anthony Blanke, a trumpeter and groom, is drawn into investigations that unfold amid political tension, court ceremony and growing suspicion.

In Of Judgement Fallen and Of Blood Descended, the focus turns to Cardinal Wolsey’s household and the wider world of Tudor London. As deaths mount and alliances shift, Anthony is repeatedly called upon to uncover the truth, even as the danger edges closer to him.

Of Judgement Fallen

Spring, 1523. As Henry VIII readies England for war with France and Cardinal Wolsey prepares to open Parliament at Blackfriars, attention turns to London. In Wolsey’s household, a visiting critic is found brutally slain while waiting for an audience at Richmond Palace, and further deaths follow.

Anthony Blanke is called upon to unmask the murderer. Working with Sir Thomas More, he faces the unpopularity of Wolsey’s rule, and as the bodies of the Cardinal’s enemies accumulate, Anthony himself falls under suspicion.

Of Blood Descended

Summer, 1522. Henry VIII’s court welcomes the emperor Charles V, while Cardinal Wolsey prepares a gift for the King: a masque of King Arthur and the Black Knight, with Anthony Blanke set to take centre stage. Anthony is the son of the king’s late ‘black trumpet’, John Blanke.

The celebrations darken when Wolsey’s historian is found gruesomely murdered. A reluctant Anthony is tasked with investigating, leading him through monastic libraries and the back streets of London, and into conflict with secretive monks, historian Polydore Vergil, and a new face at court, Anne Boleyn.
